The Colston Arms has a new name

By Martin Booth  Sunday Dec 26, 2021

The pub formerly known as the Colston Arms temporarily called itself Ye Olde Pubby McDrunkface following the statue of Edward Colston being toppled from its plinth.

And it has now dropped the name of the slave trader once and for all.

Its new moniker hopes to offer a warmer welcome to everyone visiting this St Michael’s Hill establishment.

EatDrink24/7 Launch Party is back on July 8 2026!

Also once called Micawber’s Ale House, the pub’s new name is the Open Arms.

It’s a name familiar from Shaun Keaveny’s former show on BBC Radio 6 Music, with listeners able to choose what songs to play on the fictional Open Arms’ jukebox.

The renaming of the Colston Arms comes as Colston’s School in Stapleton is midway through a consultation to change its own name.

Colston’s Girls’ School changed its name to Montpelier High School in September while the Colston Hall is now called the Bristol Beacon.

The trial of the four people accused of causing criminal damage to Colston’s statue has been adjourned until January.
