15,000-capacity live music events could be held in Queen Square

By Martin Booth  Monday Nov 27, 2023

Concert promoters with experience of putting on shows across the world have applied for a new premises licence which if granted could see them stage a series of huge live music events in Queen Square.

The events would have a capacity of up to 15,000 people and go on until as late as 11pm on Fridays and Saturdays, and 10.45pm on Sundays.

Promoters FKP Scorpio UK, behind the UK and Ireland arena tour for Blue Planet II Live in Concert, want a licence for the event series to be valid until the end of 2028 according to their application to Bristol City Council.

FKP Scorpio UK are the British branch of FKP Scorpio, a Europe-wide company who put on gigs, festivals and large-scale shows, and are currently promoting tours by artists including the Pet Shop Boys and Bristol’s very own Idles.

Bristol24/7 has asked FKP Scorpio UK for more information about their plans.

If permission is granted for the series of shows, they will likely be the biggest to take place in Queen Square since Arcadia’s giant fire-breathing spider took over the park in 2015.

Before that, Massive Attack played in Queen Square in 2003 when they called for an arena to be built in the city; with Queen Square also hosting the Harbour Festival’s main stage for many years.

With an increasing number of people now living in close proximity to Queen Square, however, it will not be an easy ride for FKP Scorpio to be granted a licence from the council.

In 2021, organisers of the new Sequences Festival were given permission to host a two-day music festival in Greville Smyth Park, before moving the event to the Lloyds Amphitheatre due to residents’ concerns about noise.
