Pemberton and Shearsmith come to Arnolfini
Bristol’s Slapstick festival of silent and classic comedy brings Steve Pemberton and Reece Shearsmith to the Arnolfini on Thursday June 9. The League of Gentlemen stars, who also wrote and performed in the fabulously grotesque Psychoville and hugely inventive Inside Number 9, will make a rare stage appearance to discuss their work with Infinite Monkey Cage co-host and stand up comedian Robin Ince.
The Slapstick connection? Well, the evening will include a full screening of the much-acclaimed, mostly wordless A Quiet Night In episode from season one of Inside Number 9. You remember: the brilliantly choreographed one in which the duo play a pair of hapless burglars who break into a modernist house. Although it failed to bag the awards it richly deserved, this was one of the series’ best-reviewed episodes. The Times called it “the funniest, cleverest, most imaginative and original television I have seen for as long as I can remember – one of those fabulous programmes where time stands still and the world around you disappears”.
There’s additional knowing fun for silent movie enthusiasts in the casting of Oona Chaplin – granddaughter of Charlie – as one of the householders.
The event will also include a Q&A session with the duo. Advance tickets, price £15, are available here.
