UWE Bristol postgraduate artists showcase personal stories through creative work
More than 60 postgraduate students from UWE Bristol will showcase work inspired by personal experiences, identity and culture at this year’s MA Showcase at Spike Island.
The free exhibition, running from July 16 to 22, features graduating students from courses including fine art, photography, printmaking, illustration and graphic design.
Among the projects is an illustrated children’s book by Bristol student Melody Addicott, designed to support young people living with Type 1 diabetes.
Diagnosed with the condition at the age of two, Melody created the book after finding few resources aimed at children struggling with the emotional challenges of managing diabetes.

She said: “Living with Type 1 diabetes can be exhausting at times… I want children to know that those feelings are completely normal and that they don’t have to manage them alone.”
Photography student Rikii Altamirano is exhibiting Fitar, a series exploring the experiences of the Timorese diaspora in the UK. The project aims to challenge negative online portrayals of Timorese people by highlighting their resilience and everyday lives.
He said: “Through Fitar, I want to show another perspective that highlights the resilience, hard work, and humanity of the Timorese here in the UK.”
Graphic design student Divyashree Kalburgi has developed Bhasha, an experimental typeface and visual identity for Khatri Bhasha, an oral language spoken by a small community in southern India that has never had a written script. The project documents the language through typography, publications and visual design.

Will Grant, UWE Bristol’s associate director of postgraduate taught studies, said: “We are so proud of all our students’ achievements this year. Their work is highly accomplished and reflects their individual identities and experiences, making for a thoughtful and compelling exhibition for the public to enjoy.”
Alongside the exhibition, UWE Bristol’s School of Arts will host a postgraduate drop-in event on July 18, giving prospective students the opportunity to meet programme leaders and find out more about postgraduate study.
