Barcan+Kirby launches divorce advice for farmers
Award-winning law firm Barcan+Kirby has launched a new specialist divorce advice service for farmers across England and Wales after members of its Family department completed training in agricultural divorce law.
The firm said farming divorces present unique legal challenges because farms often function as a family home, business and inherited asset at the same time, with each aspect treated differently by the courts.
Tom Powles, partner and head of Family at Barcan+Kirby, said: “Farming divorces are unique, insofar as the way the assets are all intertwined. It is never straightforward and often highly emotive, given the farm will have often been in the family for generations.

“To be able to provide this specialised advice is something I am proud to say our firm can offer. Whether it is the departing spouse or the farmer themselves, we can provide detailed, pragmatic advice to assist in navigating the complex process that little bit easier.”
The expansion adds to the firm’s family law offering and aims to support farming clients through what can be a particularly complex and emotional process.
