Operations begin at Grundon’s new waste transfer station
Grundon has started operations at its newly completed waste transfer station in St Philip’s Marsh, marking the latest expansion of the company’s network across southern England.
The facility will handle up to 50,000 tonnes of commercial and industrial waste a year once fully operational, allowing waste collected from local businesses to be bulked before further treatment and disposal.
The development is expected to create new jobs, including transfer station operatives, machine drivers and a weighbridge clerk, adding to the 20 staff already employed at the site.
The project follows a planning process that began in 2020, with the scheme eventually approved by the Planning Inspectorate after an appeal against Bristol City Council’s original refusal.

Grundon depot manager John Phelps said: “We’re delighted to see this exciting new project becoming operational.
“Our increased regional handling capacity will mean improved efficiency and cost for our customers, as well as lower mileage and reduced environmental impact for processing their waste.
“The facility will offer significant sustainability benefits for the entire Bristol business community. It’s a proud moment for the team here and we are looking forward to further establishing our presence in the city region.”

The company said it also plans to open a hazardous waste processing facility in Avonmouth in the future and has continued investing in vehicle electrification and fleet upgrades.
