Campaign boosts Stapleton Road’s street cleanliness
Bristol City Council and Bristol Waste Company joined forces for a community-led campaign that has helped improve street cleanliness on Stapleton Road and surrounding streets by 12.5 per cent.
The initiative forms part of a Home Office-funded project aimed at tackling crime and antisocial behaviour while improving community safety in the area.
Measures included multilingual signage in English, Somali and Arabic encouraging people to dispose of litter responsibly, as well as community engagement activities and targeted clean-up work.
The campaign saw 55 businesses take part by displaying window stickers, 39 shop shutters cleaned and repainted to remove graffiti and three skip days allowing residents to dispose of bulky waste for free.

A Valentine’s Day litter pick and the creation of a resident-led litter picking group also formed part of the project.
Research also found a 12.5 per cent improvement in residents’ perception of local litter levels.
Abi Finch, councillor for St George Central, said the campaign responded directly to concerns raised by residents and highlighted the importance of maintaining cleaner, safer neighbourhoods.
Bristol Waste operations director Ricky Gayfer added that while crews clean around 28,000 miles of streets each year, keeping the city clean requires support from residents and businesses.

He said: “Our street cleansing crews cover an incredible 28,000 miles of Bristol streets each year. That’s more than the circumference of the Earth.
“Whilst our teams do an amazing job, keeping the city clean requires everybody to do their bit. By taking steps to report litter, fly-tipping and graffiti, together we can make Bristol safer, cleaner, and more sustainable.”
