Bristol Film Festival: Raw

Director
Julia Ducournau
Certificate
18
Running Time
99 mins

A campus horror in which a vegetarian student becomes a cannibal? Bring it on! Much acclaimed when it was unveiled at Cannes, this is a smart, pleasingly gory, Cronenberg-esque debut from French writer/director Julia Ducournau.

Like the rest of her family, shy, virginal, doe-eyed young Justine (Garance Marillier) is a committed vegetarian. She also plans to follow in their footsteps by becoming a vet. But in her first week at her parents’ alma mater, she’s introduced to the pleasures of the flesh in the most revolting way imaginable – by being forced to consume raw liver. Trouble is, young Justine develops quite a taste for raw meat and isn’t too fussy about where it comes from. This is all skilfully put together, with plenty of twists and lashings of realistic gore, making it an arthouse horror treat you can enjoy between meals – although those of a nervous disposition would be advised to watch it on an empty stomach.

This Bristol Film Festival screening takes place in Redcliffe Caves as part of the Fest’s Underground Cinema programme. Go here for tickets.
