Preposterously prolific Nicolas Cage‘s first film of 2018 is a comedy horror flick that permits him to unleash his full, hugely entertaining box of OTT face-pulling tricks. It’s written and directed by Brian Taylor, who previously directed Cage in the ridiculous Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance.
The straightforward story has Cage and the ever-excellent, underused Selma Blair as ordinary, average, mildly dissatisfied identikit suburban American parents. A mysterious force then starts to compel them – and every other parent in the US – to turn on their own progeny and slaughter them with extreme prejudice. Just beneath the bloodlust, there’s a sly satire about middle-class family tensions. But let’s not get carried away here: this is primarily a gore-drenched B-movie funfest. The fact that the ever-growing ranks of the Easily Offended have been out in force to insist that there’s nothing funny about parents killing their children makes it even more enjoyable.
