Running Time
141 mins

Yay! Prolific Audition and Ichi the Killer director Takashi Miike returns to the samurai bloodbath genre for his 100th project, which is based on the Manga series of the same title by Hiroaki Samura.

Takuya Kimura – a former boy band member, no less – plays skilled samurai Manji, who comes over all unfortunately immortal after a particularly violent battle. His only hope of regaining his soul is by chopping up evildoers with a fearsome array of weaponry. Along the way, he sets out to help a girl named Rin (Hana Sugisaki, star of the splendidly titled Her Love Boils Bathwater) avenge her parents, who were killed by a group of master swordsmen led by ruthless warrior Anotsu. Some critics were snootily dismissive when this was premiered at Cannes, though the non-sourpuss ones were quick to acknowledge that it’s all enormous fun.
