Shop of the week: Public Market, Easton
Nestled in the heart of Easton on Mivart Steet lies The Public Market, a farm shop, deli and kitchen. Based on the Canadian-style public markets, the shelves are full of an eclectic mix of locally sourced fruit and vegetables, store-cupboard staples and fancy treats, as well as plants, gifts and even Bristol-made charcoal.
Opened in December 2020, it started as a cafe and extension of the now-closed East Bristol Bakery. But when lockdown started, the owners adapted.
They wanted to give it a ‘public market’-style feel – think old-fashioned flea market or traditional farmers markets.
is needed now More than ever
The aim was to connect the local community to farms and producers based in the West Country, committing to good-quality products and sustainability.

One of the main draws is the deli, which serves up freshly baked pastries, sandwiches, salads and locally sourced artisan cheeses.
All of it is made on site or at The Public Market’s partner shop Brockley Stores, based out towards Bristol Airport.
The kitchen also houses the catering part of the business, which offers anything from buffet-style lunches to a hog roast.

For manager Eli, the shop is “story-driven.”
He said staff ask themselves: “Is a product good and does it have enough of a story behind it?
“‘It’s the regular, local customers that give Public Market that community shop feel.”
