It’s this year’s Woody Allen film, which means we can be sure of two things: (1) A sole critic will acclaim it as Allen’s return to form, while everyone else damns it as rubbish; and (2) all the advance publicity will centre on the director’s alleged sexual abuse, made even more frenzied this time by #MeToo.
Wonder Wheel is a period drama of shattered dreams following a quartet of intersecting lives in the Coney Island amusement park during the 1950s. Kate Winslet is on fine form as sad actress-turned-waitress Ginny, who’s unhappily married to carousel operator Humpty (Jim Belushi). His estranged daughter (Juno Temple) has just returned home with her tail between her legs. Enter Mickey (Justin Timberlake), a hunky lifeguard with delusions of playwrighting adequacy.
