Clearly, The Muppet Christmas Carol remains the definitive adaptation of the festive Dickens classic. It’s also back in cinemas this month. But Bharat Nalluri‘s first feature since 2008’s enjoyable Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day puts a new spin on the yarn by combining a biopic of Dickens with A Christmas Carol itself to explore the circumstances in which it was written and introduce the people who inspired those famous characters.
Downton Abbey‘s Dan Stevens is cast as the author, who’s crippled with writer’s block after a series of flops. Those he encounters include an elderly miser (Christopher Plummer, who really does get to say “Humbug!”). Incidentally, if Stevens seems a little young for the role, he’s actually four years older than Dickens was when he wrote the novel.
