Warwick Thornton‘s first film to get a UK release since his striking 2009 debut Samson & Delilah is a brutal and gripping period outback western inspired by a true story, with a cast that consists mainly of indigenous Aborigine Australians.

We’re in the stifling heat of the Northern Territory of the 1920s, where Christian preacher Fred Smith (Sam Neill) sends his farmhand ‘blackfella’ Sam (Hamilton Morris) to assist drunken, embittered, racist war veteran Harry March (Ewen Leslie) with some renovation work. After Sam kills Harry in self-defence, he goes on the run, hotly pursued by Sergeant Fletcher (Bryan Brown).
