The West Wing creator Aaron Sorkin makes his directorial debut with another irresistible true-life yarn (he wrote Steve Jobs, The Social Network and Charlie Wilson’s War), serving up a peach of a role for talented Jessica Chastain.
Adapted from Molly Bloom‘s autobiography (deep breath) Molly’s Game: From Hollywood’s Elite to Wall Street’s Billionaire Boys Club, My High-Stakes Adventure in the World of Underground Poker, it tells the story of this former Olympic-class skier whose career was cut short by an accident. Winding up in LA, smart, fast-talking and cynical Molly runs the world’s most exclusive high-stakes poker game, whose punters include rock musicans, film stars and Russian mobsters – until the FBI starts to take an interest. Idris Elba plays her lawyer and Kevin Costner is cast as her equally tough-as-old-boots father in a drama that is, as one might expect of Sorkin, ceaselessly witty, with wall-to-wall voiceover narration.
