Starring Jewish comedian Menashe Lustig and based loosely on his life, documentary film-maker Joshua Z. Weinstein‘s first dramatic feature is the lightly comic tale of the eponymous bumbling kosher supermarket worker, who struggles to make ends meet and raise his son Rieven alone, following the death of his wife. But Menashe lives in Brooklyn’s ultra-orthodox Hasidic Jewish community, and the pressure is on for him to either remarry or hand over the boy to his uncle.
Performed almost entirely in Yiddish, this likeable comedy drama offers a rare insight into a notoriously camera-shy community.
