It’s Steve Carell looking glum behind a beard again, which can mean only one thing: yep, this is more awards bait. A true-life addiction, rehab and relapse drama, Belgian director Felix Van Groeningen’s first English-language film casts Carell as New York Times hack David Sheff, whose bright but wayward son Nic (Timothée Chalamet, who deservedly won an Oscar nomination for his performance in Call Me by Your Name) becomes rather too fond of crystal meth.
Dad and son each got memoirs out of their experiences (Beautiful Boy: A Father’s Journey Through His Son’s Addiction and Tweak: Growing Up on Methamphetamines respectively), from which Lion screenwriter Luke Davies drew both perspectives. Reviews have been mixed, though the performances received universal acclaim. Go here for our review.
