Bristol set to host Roller Derby Championships

By ellie pipe, Tuesday May 23, 2017

Expect excitement and high speed action as some of the country’’s best skaters head to Bristol for the 2017 British Roller Derby Championships.

The home team has “everything to play for,” says captain Rosie Black who admits the contest will be tough with the highest calibre of competitors battling it out.

She is calling on the people of Bristol to come out and support the players at South Gloucestershire and Stroud College’s WISE Campus on Saturday, June 17 and enjoy the thrills and spills of the contact sport that combines physical endurance, grace and tactical play.

The six teams featured include Bristol Roller Derby Tiger Bay Brawlers from Cardiff, Birmingham Blitz Dames, Leeds Roller Derby, Middlesbrough Roller Derby and London Brawl Saints and they make up the premier league of the women’s British Championship.

Bristol was promoted to National Tier one after an excellent season in 2016.

Black, who is captain of the women’s A team, said: “We are really looking forward to hosting this triple-header event in Bristol. Having such a high calibre of skaters come to our city is very exciting for the derby community.

“We also hope that local people, who might not have experienced roller derby before, will also come along and find out what the sport is all about.

“This season is going to be tough for Bristol because the quality of the teams involved is so high, but we already have one win under our belts so we’ve all to play for. If we can fill Wise Campus with cheering Bristol supporters that will really give us a boost.”

Doors open from 2.30pm and there will also be a marketplace with cake stalls and roller derby merchandise on sale, as well as a fully-licensed bar and cafe.

An hour-long game is split into two minute ‘jams’ and first-time spectators should expect loud cheering from the crowds when big hits send skaters flying.

Tickets for the event are on sale now and cost £8, or two for £12, if purchased in advance. The price is £10 on the door and children under the age of 12 go free. Buy tickets online from Brown Paper Tickets.
