My Bristol Favourites: Jerry Milner

By Martin Booth  Friday Dec 20, 2019

Jerry Milner owns CAMB Knives International, based in Yate. To celebrate the business’ 30th anniversary this year, Jerry and his team have raised £30,000 for The Grand Appeal, the charity for Bristol Children’s Hospital.

Here are Jerry’s top-five Bristol favourites:

La Grotta

EatDrink24/7 Launch Party is back on July 8 2026!
Exclusive collabs from Bristol’s favourite food vendors, available for one night only. Be first to grab your free copy of the EatDrink24/7 guide – plus every ticket comes with a free limited-edition beer can.

La Grotta restaurant on Union Street is one of my favourite places to eat. Before my wife and I got married in the 70s, we would head into Bristol to do some shopping for our ‘bottom drawer’. This lovely family run business would be our choice for lunch every time! The tradition carried on once we were married and had children too. The food is delicious and the owners are friendly. They sometimes still recognise us when we pop in now!”

The Avon Gorge

“This is a beautiful, scenic part of Bristol. I have very fond memories of it as a boy, when I enjoyed playing along the towpath and under the bridge. However, I was a little naughty when I was about 14 years old (don’t try this at home!) and I thought it was a good idea to try and climb the gorge. Unfortunately I got stuck and was unable to get down so the fire brigade had to come and get me. I was brought home by the police and of course I never did it again. Now I just admire the views from afar!”

The Locarno

“What is now called the O2 Academy was one of my favourite places to go to listen to bands and play pool when I was younger. I remember the revolving stage: one side it would be a DJ and then it would move to reveal a fantastic brass band. It is great that it still continues to be a popular music venue supporting local musicians to top groups.”

Ashton Court

“I have always referred to Ashton Court as Lady Smyths, and this has passed on to my children too, who call it this as well. We have had many enjoyable times walking the dogs, flying kites, playing ball games, lovely family time. It’s such an amazing, beautiful open space close to the centre of Bristol.”

Greville Smyth Park

“A wonderful, green open space for everyone to enjoy. A park that I loved going to as a young boy. Where I would play kick the can, cricket and football. And also get up to lots of mischief!”
