Video: The story of six deaf men and an epic cycle mission

By Vedrana Katinic  Sunday Aug 7, 2022

Soon after they completed a 957-mile long cycle ride, six deaf men reunited to reflect on their journey.

Centre for Deaf and Hard of Hearing People hosted the group at St Werburgh’s Community Centre to share their experience of the ten-day challenge that took them from John O’Groats to Land’s End – all to raise awareness of deaf men’s mental health.

Ed Stevens, Mark Pickford, Russell Basey, Rory Mortimore, Steve Bent and Martyn Brook raised a total of £3,783 for their cause.

EatDrink24/7 Launch Party is back on July 8 2026!
Exclusive collabs from Bristol’s favourite food vendors, available for one night only. Be first to grab your free copy of the EatDrink24/7 guide – plus every ticket comes with a free limited-edition beer can.

Funds raised during the challenge will cover the costs of interpreters and provide workshops and information sessions on mental health for deaf men in Bristol.

Mark Gill from Centre for Deaf and Hard of Hearing People said: “The Centre for Deaf is extremely pleased to recognise the achievements of six deaf men and their cycle.

“Our latest project ‘Deaf People Together’, funded by Bristol City Council’s Bristol Impact Fund, was a four-year project (ending in 2025) to re-establish community activities and support for the Bristol deaf community by working with existing mainstream organisations to ensure that their services cater to the local deaf community in a meaningful and effective way.”
