New cycle paths and smoother pavements on Whiteladies Road
New cycle paths are now in use on both sides of the lower section of Whiteladies Road.
Pavements have also been repaved to make them much smoother having previously been a challenging environment to navigate due to tree roots.
The improvements form part of a project to reduce the risk of flooding along the stretch of Whiteladies Road between the junction of Tyndalls Park Road and St Paul’s Road, and Queen’s Road.
But it’s a bumpy ride on two wheels towards the RWA with the new cycle lane spitting cyclists back onto the road outside Victoria Methodist Church.
The work was funded from the government’s City Region Sustainable Transport Settlement secured by WECA.
It was designed to fit in with plans to improve Park Street and the Triangle which are now no longer happening due to being voted down by Bristol councillors, but Bristol transport supremo Ed Plowden says he hopes “we will be able to improve connectivity for active travel along these routes in the future”.
Plowden, chair of the transport & connectivity committee at City Hall, said: “While the work has taken longer than expected, this section of one of Bristol’s busiest roads is now better prepared for the future.
“I’m also glad that we’ve been able to retain the beautiful mature trees that line the street, while making it easier for cyclists and pedestrians to get around.”
