Residents demand action on ‘dangerous’ stretch of road
Residents in St George are calling for improved road safety measures on a stretch of road they describe as “really dangerous” for pedestrians and cyclists.
Campaigners want a ‘modal filter’ installed at junction of Hudds Vale Road and Whiteway Avenue to prevent drivers from using the former as a through-route while allowing access for pedestrians and cyclists.
Under the proposal, vehicle access would be restricted from the eastern end of the road which is a narrow section with no pavements.
Supporters say the measure would make journeys safer, especially for children travelling to a nearby school.

The area is a busy route used by families and schoolchildren
Among those backing the campaign is Christine Kavanagh who owns a property on the road but no longer lives on the street.
She said: “We saw so many problems during the five years we lived there: road rage, speeding, my son was almost hit by a car once.”
Kavanagh, a graphic designer, said the lack of pavements creates particular challenges for parents with pushchairs, children and people with mobility needs.
“Even though it’s a 20mph road, there’s nowhere safe to step out of the way of traffic,”
“A lot of other parents at school who know that we live on this road talk about the issue, especially if you have a pram.
“One of the neighbours who is older has some accessibility needs.
“That’s quite difficult for her to navigate. Without any footpaths, people are often pushed into the road.”

Green Party councillors for St George CentralAbi Finch and Cara Lavin have supported residents’ efforts.
Calling the idea a “no brainer”, Kavanagh said there was support among nearby households with campaigners distributing leaflets and gathering statements from residents.
“It’s a really lovely community and everyone knows each other,” she said.
“But being able to come out safely onto the road and use the street more without so many cars passing through would be really lovely.”
A public meeting about the issue is taking place at Air Balloon Academy on June 11 at 5.30pm
