Cycle path through Centre to not be invisible for much longer
A black tarmac surface with large white painted bike symbols is set to replace the ‘invisible’ cycle path through the Centre.
Work is due to start on the new surface on June 9 and take four weeks to complete, with the aim to make it better stand out to pedestrians who can never be blamed for walking on the stone blocks that do little to differentiate the current cycle path.
The route scheduled to be resurfaced goes from the Cascade Steps, runs parallel with St Augustine’s Parade, crosses Baldwin Street and finishes at the Colston Avenue crossing.
There will also be four crossing points created for pedestrians and repainted white lines, with the white lines and bike symbols also due to be repainted on the cycle route from the Cascade Steps to the bus stop on Prince Street.

Vice chair of the transport & connectivity committee, Conservative councillor Graham Morris, said: “It’s great that we’re moving onto the next phase of works, which I am sure will be popular with many.
“The cycleway through this part of the centre has long been a site of conflict, with pedestrians often walking along it or across it without realising it’s not a footpath.
“The new black surface and white lines will stand out, and we have the option to return later and add a red high friction surface, which is set to be trialled elsewhere in the city.
“This will allow us to see the results of the trial, and how effective the black surface is, before committing to further works at Centre Promenade.”
