Bristol schools to strike for children killed in Gaza

By Mia Vines Booth  Wednesday Nov 1, 2023

Children across Bristol are due to go on strike this Friday in solidarity with the thousands of children that have been killed in Gaza.

Parents and children will take to College Green in a peaceful protest, expressing outrage at the killing of children and to extend their solidarity to Palestinian families and all those suffering.

In a gesture of remembrance, a ribbon will be tied to the City Council railings for each child who has been killed in Gaza since October 7.

According to Save the Children, one child is now being killed every ten minutes in Gaza.

Protesters will be making a demand for an immediate ceasefire to Bristol’s MPs, Kerry McCarthy, Darren Jones, Karin Smyth and Thangam Debbonaire, signed by all the children in attendance on the day.

The campaign is made up of local campaigners and mothers, and supported by Bristol Stop the War Coalition, Palestine Solidarity Campaign Bristol and the Green Party.

It is the latest in a number of protests in Bristol following the attack that Hamas launched against Israeli civilians close to the border with Gaza.

A spokesperson for Schools Strike for Palestine said: “As the situation in Gaza intensifies, we are deeply concerned our leaders are gravely failing a vulnerable and disempowered population by enabling a deliberately disproportionate attack, resulting in collective punishment and a devastating loss of life.

“Whatever our faith or politics, we wish to unite for the preservation and protection of children and families, and collectively demand a ceasefire right now.”
