Thousands march through Bristol calling for ceasefire in Palestine

By Martin Booth  Monday Oct 30, 2023

An estimated 10,000 people marched through Bristol on Sunday afternoon to call for an immediate ceasefire in Palestine.

In one of the largest protests of recent years seen in our city, marchers made their way from the Shah Jalal Mosque in Eastville to College Green where there were a number of speeches in front of City Hall until after sunset.

The march began on Stapleton Road and Old Market Street before passing Castle Park, and heading down Union Street, Rupert Street and St Augustine’s Parade.

Led by a white van rigged with speakers, marchers’ chants included “from the river to the sea, Palestine will be free”, “Israel is a terrorist state” and “ceasefire now”.

The media was also targeted with chants of “BBC, shame on you”, with one banner reading: ‘Every time the media lies, 1000s of Palestinians die”

A large police presence accompanied the march, with officers on foot, on bicycles and on horseback.
