A hero in your local Wilko

By Bristol24/7  Friday Oct 21, 2016

The manager of Wilko on East Street in Bedminster is extremely modest about being named as one of the finalists in The Great British High Street Competition.

“Without the support of my team, local businesses, residents and the council we wouldn’t have been able to do it”, says Simon Dicken, nominated in the category of best national store manager or employee and now with a chance of winning £10,000.

If Simon triumphs, he will also win expert training from Google’s digital taskforce for shops, bars and restaurants, and a trip to Twitter’s London office to further boost his social media skills.

EatDrink24/7 Launch Party is back on July 8 2026!

Simon added: “I’m exceptionally honoured and humbled to be in the top three. But it’s not about me, it’s about Bedminster and about Bristol.”

Broadmead has also been nominated in the prestigious awards in the City Location category.

Broadmead has been nominated in the City Location category of The Great British High Street Competition.

Broadmead impressed the judges with “with their ambition and imagination”, and are in this category alongside The Cathedral Quarter in Derby and the Castle/Arcade District in Norwich.

The competition is run by the Department of Communities and Local Government, where this year’s contest saw a record of 900 entries across all 14 categories, including the new categories for both individuals and shops.

High streets minister Andrew Percy said: “Our high streets are the life and soul of towns, villages and cities across the country and the record number of competition entries this year is proof of their continued importance to local life.

“There are bustling high streets up and down the country from North London to Northumberland and now is the time you can show support for your local area and get voting.”

To be crowned the overall champion, Simon and Broadmead need your vote via the Great British High Street website, www.thegreatbritishhighstreet.co.uk.
