Pubs and Bars / Pub of the Week

Pub of the week: The White Hart

By Lowie Trevena  Friday Aug 30, 2019

“You want me to tell you secret?” the bartender asks in response for my request for a receipt.

“I totally heard tell me a secret, did you hear ‘tell me a secret?’” he asks a customer at the bar who sips on a half pint of beer. “I got no secrets, but I got plenty about other people,” he adds with a wink.

Laughter is exchanged as the lady drinking a beer sees a friend stood at the bar, and they catch up in the shadow of the spirits, and ales on tap.

A range of ales and beers on tap at The White Hart

The White Hart, a pub since 1672 and situated next to the bus station, claims home to spirits other than just vodka and whisky.

The chapel house that the pub is located in was purchased by two brothers in the 1600s and converted to an inn. Soon after, however, one of the brothers was killed by the other over the premise’s land.

His ghost is said to haunt the pub to this day, nearly 350 years after his death.

On a recent Thursday evening, however, ghouls are the last thing on anyone’s mind. With the sun shining and The White Hart’s welcoming atmosphere, it’s a perfect place to have a whisky and coke and bask in the laughter and loud conversations of people catching up over a cool drink.
