New bakery opens with some of Bristol’s best bakes

By Martin Booth  Thursday Jul 13, 2023

Catley’s is now open in Clifton Village selling some of the best baked goods in Bristol.

Currently just available for takeout, Catley’s on King’s Road off Boyce’s Avenue will soon also become a cafe, with seating both inside and out.

It has been opened by Hannah Catley of Lockdown Loaves, who opened her first premises in Winterbourne during the pandemic.

After spending ten years as a pastry chef in London working in restaurants such as Allegra in Stratford and the Chiltern Firehouse in Marylebone, where she became head pastry chef at 21, Hannah moved back to her hometown of Bristol in lockdown – which inspired the name of her first business.

On the second official day of Catley’s on Thursday, a lemon meringue pie was on the counter. This is the dish (with added summer berries) that will be prepared by Hannah as part of the one-off collaboration tasting menu at a special event at Wapping Wharf on July 20 to celebrate the publication of the new EatDrink24/7 guide.

Loaves of bread including seeded and white sourdough are baked fresh every morning by Hannah.

Also on the counter on Thursday were sweet delights including a trio of Danish pastries: raspberry and custard, cherry and almond, and apricot and almond; as well as a pain au raisin, Biscoff babka, cinnamon bun and almond pain au chocolate.

Savoury options included a scotch egg, sausage roll, and cheddar and sesame swirl.

Coffee is from Triple Co in Montpelier.
