Bristol Old Vic’s ‘The Grinning Man’ heads to West End

By Ellie Pipe  Saturday Oct 7, 2017

A trailblazing musical, premiered as part of the Bristol Old Vic’s 250th anniversary season will transfer to the West End.

The announcement put an end to months of speculation surrounded The Grinning Man, a widely acclaimed show that is now set to follow other homegrown productions, including Peter Pan and Jane Eyre onto the prestigious London stage.

Telling the story of Grinpayne, a grotesquely mutilated man, as he seeks for the truth about how his face was permanently cut into an eternal grin, the macabre musical is directed by Tom Morris and based on The Man Who Laughs by Victor Hugo (Les Misérables).

Brought to life by writer Carl Grose, with composers Tim Phillips and Marc Teitle at the helm and puppetry from Gyre & Gimble, the original puppeteers of War Horse, the show made a triumphant premiere on the BOV stage in 2016.

Following predictions it would be destined for bigger things, the production went on to garner major award nominations (WhatsOnStage Awards, UK Theatre Awards, BroadwayWorld UK Awards) and a flurry of critical acclaim.

The cast is led by Louis Maskell and Julian Bleach, who will reprise the roles of Grinpayne and Barkilphedro during the London run.

Performances will begin in Studio 1 at Trafalgar Studios on Tuesday, December 5, with tickets going on sale on Wednesday, October 11. For tickets, visit www.atgtickets.com/trafalgarstudios or call 0844 871 7632.
