Major incident declared after fire breaks out at recycling centre
The smell of smoke filled the air in Avonmouth on Wednesday after a serious fire broke out.
Fire crews arrived at the Suez recycling centre off Merebank Road soon after 1.30am, with local residents advised to keep windows and doors closed to stop smoke from getting into their homes.
No injuries were reported in the blaze which was declared a major incident by the emergency services.

Kings Weston Lane remained closed between St Andrew’s Road and Long Cross for most of the morning.
In a statement at 10.24am, an Avon Fire & Rescue spokesperson said: “The incident at Suez recycling centre on Kings Weston Lane in Avonmouth is being scaled down, with the majority of the fire now extinguished.
“Crews are continuing to dampen down any remaining hot spots, and we still have a presence on scene.
“The smoke in the air has now significantly dissipated. However, if you see or smell smoke, please continue to keep windows and doors closed…
“We understand the impact and inconvenience while we responded to this incident, with the support of our partners in the police and the council.
“Please bear with us all a little longer. We’re very grateful for your patience and cooperation as we work to keep you safe.”
