Exploring Bristol one photograph at a time
You might have already met Alex Young or know somebody who has had their photograph taken by him.
Alex has only lived in Bristol for six months with his wife Lauren but has already spoken to hundreds of people across the city, asking them if they want him to take their portrait.
Alex has also gamified his photography: challenging himself to take 100 portraits in just one day at locations including North Street and Gloucester Road.
For his photography, Alex uses his middle name so the photographs on this page are by Alex Daniel.

Alex chooses his subjects because “they have a spark”.
“I can’t really define it,” he tells Bristol24/7. “It’s just a thing you notice and it speaks to you. And sometimes it only reveals itself afterwards.”
Sometimes, 29-year-old Alex’s interactions with his subjects last only a few seconds, sometimes a few minutes and sometimes people are completely uninterested.
But Alex, who before moving to Bristol took medical photographs for the NHS and now specialises in weddings, said that on the whole people in Bristol are more open to have their photo taken than anywhere else he has visited.

“I want to create an image that is like an honest reflection of who somebody is,” Alex says.
“I think it’s just an honest reflection of who somebody is but with like a respect for the kind of sacredness of humanity… I’m trying to communicate the essence of a person.”
