Baseball bat attack on cars linked to homophobic abuse
Two cars were attacked with metal poles and baseball bats while men were sat inside in the early hours of the morning on the Downs in a suspected hate crime being linked to homophobic abuse in the city centre.
One car in Ladies Mile had its windows and lights smashed by two people as a man sat inside on Thursday at about 2am. A similar attack took place involving three offenders at about 2am on Friday in Circular Road.
A 30-year-old man was arrested over the weekend but has since been bailed by police.
The two attacks are being treated as potential hate crimes by the force who are also investigating links to an incident where homophobic abuse was shouted at door staff outside OMG, a gay club on Frogmore Street, on Friday evening.
Following information received by police, a car was stopped in the Henleaze area of Bristol on Sunday morning and a man was arrested on suspicion of criminal damage. He has been bailed until November 22.
Members of the police’s LGBT+ team have been carrying out additional reassurance patrols over the weekend following the attacks.
Police are asking anyone with information to call Bristol Investigations on 101 and give the call handler the reference number 5216210932.
