New play “untangles the web of toxic masculinity”.
“In the cultural landscape of #MeToo, join one man as he navigates through the harsh terrain of his own story of masculinity.
“A ‘nice guy’, James thought he knew what it meant to be a man. Yet he witnesses a growing, dark shame as he questions his journey to manhood and whether he’s ever been close to that destination.
“In a funny, raw and compelling performance, The Spider Glass entertains whilst exploring a sense of shame we would rather not acknowledge in adulthood; how messages from school changing rooms, family rituals or seemingly innocent sexual explorations have blurred our idea of what healthy masculinity looks like in our world.
“With mental health at a cultural breaking point – suicide being the biggest killer of men between 18 and 50 – stories like The Spider Glass need to be seen to allow a new story of masculinity to unfold.”
The show will be an Edinburgh Festival Fringe debut for The Big I Am, a company “on a mission to challenge, through storytelling, the way cultural labels disempower us”.
“Having experience in men’s workshops of all ages, award-winning writer and performer Craig Malpass turns the spotlight on toxic masculinity at a time when it’s desperately needed.
