The First Purge

Director
Gerard McMurray
Certificate
15
Running Time
97 mins

Not, as you might be forgiven for assuming, an eating disorder documentary, this is the fourth film in the entertaining Purge dystopian horror movie franchise and, as the title implies, a prequel to 2013’s original The Purge. Yep, they’re really starting to stretch that novel premise now.

You’ll recall that in a future totalitarian America, purge night is an annual 12-hour period during which all crime (including murder) is legal, permitting the proles to let off steam. Now we find out how it originated when the New Founding Fathers of America first tested the aggression-venting theory in an isolated community. Although the prequel is written and produced by series creator James DeMonaco, this is the first film in the series that he hasn’t directed.
