Cinema Rediscovered: Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory

Running Time
96 mins

Gene Wilder stars in this 1971 adaptation of Roald Dahl’s classic tale of a boy who wins the opportunity to visit a confectionery paradise and meet its mysterious owner: a middle-aged man who lures children with the promise of sweeties. Dahl absolutely loathed this version for the liberties it took with his story. Indeed, that’s the reason why no one has ever been given permission to film the follow-up, Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator. But it’s proven hugely popular with the punters, winning a public poll (with 63% of the vote) to determine the nation’s favourite Dahl adaptation to mark the author’s 100th birthday.

It’s back on screen as part of the Cinema Rediscovered festival.
