Met Opera Summer Encores: Macbeth

Director
Adrian Noble
Certificate
12A
Running Time
166 mins

When Scottish general Macbeth (Zeljko Lucic) encounters a group of witches, they prophesy that he will become king. Encouraged by his ambitious, scheming wife (Anna Netrebko), the regal rotter murders King Duncan.

Director Adrian Noble has described this as “the greatest story Verdi ever told”, his popular 2007 Met production boldly relocating it in a 20th century civil war setting. There’s some humour too. Check out those witches recast as dancing bag ladies. This recording of the 2014 production sees Anna Netrebko singing the demanding role of Lady Macbeth for the first time at the Met. It’s back on screen in the Met Summer Encore season.
