Carpenter François tries to persuade his missus Thérèse that they can be happily married while he continues to have it off with his mistress, the dirty dog. She’s not convinced and drowns herself, whereupon he lives happily ever after with their two children – and the mistress. Agnès Varda‘s sensual love triangle drama was dead controversial on release way back in 1965, both for its amorality and the fact the the actors playing François and Thérèse were a real-life couple (Jean-Claude and Claire Drouot).

It’s back on screen in the Gleaning Truths: Agnès Varda season of digital restorations of her movies.
