Minimalist director Kelly Reichardt returns to Meek’s Cutoff territory with this typically pared-back drama set in early 19th century Oregon. Adapted with Jonathan Raymond from his novel The Half Life, it’s the story of a loner (John Magaro) who teams up with a fortune-seeking Chinese immigrant (Orion Lee) to pilfer milk from a wealthy landowner’s (Toby Jones) prized Jersey cow.

” . . . a terrifically tough and sinewy tale of the old west, shaped by the brutally implacable market forces of capitalism,” was The Guardian‘s verdict in its five-star review.
