The drama unfolds of the course of a year, beginning with the theatrical Ekdahl family’s Christmas celebrations. The patriarch then carks it on stage during a production of Hamlet. The lives of 10-year-old Alexander and his 8-year-old sister Fanny change dramatically when their mother marries a cruel and sadistic minister. But – hey – is that an atypical happy ending on the horizon. Beautifully photographed by Sven Nykvist, this perfect period evocation of childhood justly bagged the Best Foreign Film Oscar back in 1983.
