Cruella

Director
Craig Gillespie
Certificate
12A
Running Time
134 mins

Disney’s milking of its 101 Dalmatians franchise based, increasingly distantly, on Dodie Smith’s 1956 novel, continues with this third live-action feature after 101 Dalmatians and, er, 102 Dalmatians.

Like the box office hit Maleficent, Cruella ditches the cutesy stuff to focus on the villain. The action is updated to punk-era London, where dastardly aspiring fashion designer Estella ‘Cruella’ de Vil (Emma Stone) becomes obsessed with dalmatian fur. Emma Thompson is cast as her boss and eventual rival, giving the whole thing a Disneyfied Devil Wears Prada feel. Interestingly, despite the sanitised punk rock backdrop, there’s very little punk on the soundtrack apart from the inevitable outing for The Clash’s Should I Stay or Should I Go. It’s mostly classic rock from Supertramp, ELO, Queen and even The Doors.
