Three celebrated debut novelists discuss their debut novels, and writing about relationships and feeling.

Sharlene Teo was born in Singapore in 1987. She has an LLB in Law from the University of Warwick and an MA in Creative Writing from the University of East Anglia, where she received the Booker Prize Foundation Scholarship and the David TK Wong Creative Writing award. She holds fellowships from the Elizabeth Kostova Foundation and the University of Iowa International Writing Program. In 2016, she won the inaugural Deborah Rogers Writer’s Award for Ponti, her first novel.

Megan Hunter was born in Manchester in 1984, and now lives in Cambridge with her young family. She has a BA in English Literature from Sussex University, and an MPhil in English Literature: Criticism and Culture from Jesus College, Cambridge. Her poetry has been shortlisted for the Bridport Prize, alongside her dystopian novel, The End We Start From.

Laura Kaye is an author based in London. Her first novel, English Animals was published by Little, Brown in January 2017 and she is currently finishing a second. She is particularly interested in animals, rural life, gender and sexuality and her books tend to form themselves around these themes.

Apart from writing, Laura is a producer specialising in music documentaries. She joined the BBC Music TV Department in 2005 to work on Brasil, Brasil after graduating from Cambridge University with MPhil specialising in Brazilian music – her passion – and has been there on and off for most of her television career working on arts documentaries – including Flamenco: Gypsy Soul, Krautrock: The Rebirth of Germany, Synth Britannia, Latin Music USA, The Art of Mexico and Reginald D Hunter’s Songs of the South.
