September’s guest at Spike Island’s excellent Novel Writers series is Eley Williams. Her debut collection of short stories, Attrib. and other stories (Influx Press £9.99), has received widespread acclaim. Cal Revely-Calder writing in the Guardian calls the collection “beautiful”, and Melissa Harrison, writing in the Financial Times, says “it deserves to be read by everyone with a love of words”.

The collection focuses on the difficulties of communication and the way in which one’s thoughts — absurd, encompassing, oblique — may never be fully communicable and yet can overwhelm. Attrib. and other stories celebrates the tricksiness of language just as it confronts its limits.
