Creative Reactions
Collaborative exhibition between over 35 artists and scientists.
“Usually, artists and scientists inhabit very different worlds. However, when they do collaborate, the resulting work can be inspiring and thought-provoking, forcing us to consider provocative issues surrounding cutting-edge research. This is exactly what the Creative Reactions Bristol project hopes to achieve by pairing Bristol-based researchers and scientists.
“Part of the Pint of Science Festival, an international event which brings conversations with researchers about the latest cutting-edge research to the pub, the project will curate and present over 35 artistic reactions to scientific research, covering topics from genetics to geology, nanobots to neuroscience, and stems cells to sociology.
“The project culminates in this two-week exhibition in Hamilton House Gallery, where members of the public will be able explore the results of the artist-scientist collaborations. Creative Reactions Bristol will also curate a jam-packed schedule of workshops and events designed to complement the topics the topics brought up through the exhibition.
“A key attraction is likely to be a workshop by the Rising Ape Collective, a group that specialises in creating fun and interactive spaces that encourage people to think about brand new ideas in science, technology and society. Several other workshops are also scheduled, aiming to promote discussion on topical issues including air pollution and robots.
“As the largest version of the Creative Reactions event in the UK this year, the project will almost certainly have something for everyone. Dr Catherine Gilmore, lead organiser of Creative Reactions Bristol team, credits Bristol’s unique culture for her team’s success in involving so many scientists and artists in the project. “Bristol is extremely fortunate enough to have both plenty of world-leading researchers and a deep pool of creative talent in quite a condensed space” she said. “I’m personally looking forward to seeing what is created when the two are mixed!””
Alongside the exhibition there will be a number of events – talks, workshops, launch evening, etcetera – where artists and scientists can introduce the artworks and talk a little about the nature of overlap of art and science. Artworks will be for sale.
