My Bristol Favourites: Savita Willmott

By Martin Booth  Thursday Jun 6, 2019

Savita Willmott is CEO of Bristol Natural History Consortium and has been directing the charity’s major public event, the Festival of Nature, since 2007.

This year, the festival has grown to nine full days which culminate in the Big Weekend on June 8 and 9. The UK’s largest free celebration of the natural world stretches across both Queen Square and Millennium Square.

These are Savita’s top five Bristol favourites:

EatDrink24/7 Launch Party is back on July 8 2026!
Exclusive collabs from Bristol’s favourite food vendors, available for one night only. Be first to grab your free copy of the EatDrink24/7 guide – plus every ticket comes with a free limited-edition beer can.

Wapping Wharf

“It’s a rare week that I don’t make it down to Wapping Wharf at some point. I love a sunny Saturday afternoon enjoying tapas at Gambas with my other half, picking up lovely organic groceries at Better Food or a special meal at Root with friends.”

Queen Square

“I live just next to Queen Square and can often be found lazing under a tree with a book. It’s brilliant to have such an open green space in the centre of the city. It’s no wonder we decided to ‘stretch out’ the Festival of Nature to include one of the city’s best-known green spaces!”

Chums

“Is it just me or does the beer scene in Bristol get better and better? A current favourite is Chums on Chandos Road in Redland. With super friendly bar staff and a good mix of beer, it’s a micropub and brilliant neighbourhood pub rolled into one. And I don’t even live in the neighbourhood!”

Source

“The Festival of Nature office is based right in the heart of St Nick’s Market, so there’s no end of lunch options. The night markets are also a brilliant end to the day, and I frequently pop next door to Source for either daytime coffees with our partners, or to see Joe for some fresh meat or fish on the way home.”

Avery’s

Avery’s is like a cavern of wine secrets. It’s an amazing place for a browse, a tasting in the cellars or just a chat with the staff. Sometimes I’m lazy and just tell the team what I’m cooking for dinner and ask for a recommendation. Sometimes I can spend ages picking out a bottle or two. Avery’s did the wine for my wedding and their champagne is always my go-to celebration drink.”
