My Bristol Favourites: Mike Taylor

By Martin Booth  Saturday Apr 6, 2019

Mike Taylor is chief operating officer of the Royal Photographic Society, who have recently moved their headquarters from Bath to the Paintworks. A new exhibition that has just opened at RPS House is Altered Ocean by Mandy Baker, raising awareness about plastic pollution in the world’s oceans.

Here are Mike’s top-five Bristol favourites:

Rita’s

EatDrink24/7 Launch Party is back on July 8 2026!
Exclusive collabs from Bristol’s favourite food vendors, available for one night only. Be first to grab your free copy of the EatDrink24/7 guide – plus every ticket comes with a free limited-edition beer can.

“You have to go here after midnight. It’s always full of life. You’re guaranteed an interesting conversation with a stranger as well as a really good kebab. For me, that experience sums up my Bristol: different people all mixed up, never quite knowing what’s going to happen next. Rita’s has been on Stokes Croft for as long as I can remember and it remains while so many other places have gone. Long may it last!”

The M32

“Having been away from Bristol, there’s nothing better than driving down the M32, coming round the bend and feeling like you’re coming home.”

Narroways

“In the summer I love to go up there, sit on the grass with about another 30 people and watch the sun set over the city. I just enjoy the peace and quiet, and that panoramic view from here in St Werburgh’s.”

Underfall Yard

“I really love Underfall Yard as a reminder of Bristol’s maritime heritage. I love to go through there and watch boats being built as they have been for hundreds of years.”

Cycling

“One of the places where I most appreciate the joys of cycling in Bristol is cycling down the hill towards St James Barton roundabout where you start to overtake cars. On a bicycle you can get into the city centre faster than any car.”
