My Bristol Favourites: Heather Marks

By Martin Booth  Saturday Jul 29, 2023

Heather Marks is one half of the duo behind new pop-up micro bookshop Goatshed Books, based in Future Leap on Gloucester Road.

She is also co-editor of short story collection The Book of Bristol and creative producer at purpose-driven change agency Words of Colour.

These are Heather’s top-five Bristol favourites:

EatDrink24/7 Launch Party is back on July 8 2026!

“This woodland near Flax Bourton is so beautiful, it feels like you’re in the middle of a fantastical adventure. I’ve been here in sunshine and rain, and both times have felt magical.”

Orpheus Cinema

“I love the Orpheus in Henleaze! It’s cheap, cheerful, and always so lovely to walk here on a sunny afternoon or evening and catch a beer at the Westbury Park pub opposite before going up the stairs to this little treasure.”

Jikoni

Jikoni showcases the food culture of east Africa, with dishes from Kenya, Somalia, Ethiopia and beyond – photo: Jikoni

“This little eatery is the definition of small but mighty. Run by the indomitable Iman and James, and nestled in the Coach House in St Paul’s, Jikoni might only be open for a few hours from Wednesday to Saturday but they serve BIG flavours which makes it even more special. I recommend getting several sambusas!”

The Golden Lion

The Golden Lion near the top of Gloucester Road has so much character, and reminds me a lot of my favourite haunts back in Kent where I grew up. It’s got something on nearly every weekend: swing, rock, jazz, electronic, you name it and they’ve got a pub quiz. And it’s got espresso martinis on tap. What more could you ask for?”

Jeevans

Jeevan’s in Easton has the best samosas in the city. Need I say more?”
