Restored aircraft hangar reopens as cafe and event space
From the garden of Spitfire Hangar, there is a view of a trio of other hangars the other side of the former Filton Airfield which will hopefully by the end of 2028 become Bristol’s arena.
Dating from around 1917, Spitfire Hangar opened its doors on Wednesday morning showing what a converted hangar can look like – albeit on a much smaller scale than the future arena complex within the Brabazon hangars which give their name to this new Brabazon neighbourhood.
The largest Mokoko bakery and cafe yet sits at the heart of Spitfire Hangar on Frise Street, which owners YTL Live hope will become “a place for people to come together, with food, culture and community at its heart”.
Previously known as Hangar 16U and built for use at Filton Aerodrome during the First World War, it also saw service in the Second World War.
Its new name comes because during the Second World War, it was the home of a Spitfire squadron.

The new Mokoko at Spitfire Hangar opened 15 years to the day since the first Mokoko at Abbey Churchyard in Bath
Mokoko managing director, Sarah Ballinger, said: “After many months of preparation, from the initial design to the incredible work of the team, we are delighted to be part of the iconic Spitfire Hangar.
“Opening in Brabazon represents a milestone for us – an opportunity to share our passion for artisan baking and showcase our signature collection of products, designed to delight this vibrant new neighbourhood.”

Spitfire Hangar has the first known reference to the general type of roof construction that became known as the ‘Belfast truss’
Within Spitfire Hangar, which is operated by the Brabazon Community Trust Charity, are also a number of different event spaces.
It is hoped that these will be able to host community gatherings, workshops, exhibitions, pop‑ups and private celebrations.

Spitfire Hangar venue & events manager, Naomi Easy, said: “We’re incredibly proud to open the doors of Spitfire Hangar.
“We can’t wait to see this building come to life and be used by residents at Brabazon, local businesses and wider community.”
