Metro mayor says Bristol will never get an underground
There was no room for nuance in metro mayor Dan Norris’ answer to whether Bristol will ever get an underground railway.
A mass transit system with underground elements is something that his Labour colleague, Bristol mayor Marvin Rees, is so clear should happen that he recently committed £15m to take his plans “to the next stage”.
But when asked on Points West by David Garmston whether Bristol will ever get an underground, Norris had one word: “No.”
Writing on his blog in November, Rees said that an underground “is deliverable for Bristol”.
“That’s not to say that there won’t be challenges,” he said. There are for every major project that’s ever been delivered.
“We cannot turn back the clocks to the decades of non-delivery… The negative voices we hear at full council must be contradicted.”
He added: “There can then be no excuse for continuing to talk down our city and its ambitions. With the work already done and the next phase in progress, there can be no excuse for failure.”
