Firefighters use hoses to cool down overheating bridge
Fire crews used water from the docks in order to cool down a bridge that had overheated.
The roadway of Plimsoll Bridge expanded due to the warm temperatures meaning that it was unable to swing.
Firefighters spent Monday afternoon hosing the bridge which eventually swung again soon before 4.30pm.
There was of course TRAFFIC CHAOS as car drivers were forced to take alternative routes to avoid the swing bridge that has crossed Cumberland Basin since 1965.
On their social media channels, Bristol City Council thanked members of the public for “bearing with us while we work to cool down this overheated bridge”.

While firefighters hosed down the surface of the bridge, Bristol’s historic firefighting boat Pyronaut – one of M Shed’s working exhibits – helped cool down the underneath of the span.
On Instagram, Bristol Harbour Authority wrote that “due to extreme heat the Plimsoll Bridge expanded and needed a cool down”.
