Lettering lovers assemble!

By Martin Booth  Tuesday Sep 20, 2022

The second gathering of the Letter Luvvers is taking place on Wednesday above a pub which was once the haunt of inky-fingered printers.

Letter Luvvers is a new meet-up group which sees a number of short talks followed by drinks.

Talks at Wednesday’s meet-up will be from Fyonafinn, Tobias Newbigin and Athena Cauley-Yu: experts in lettering, signwriting and letterpress printing

Letter Luvvers co-founder Laurence Penney told Bristol24/7 that there is so much about fonts and lettering that he loves.

“For me, it’s the fact that these supremely useful little shapes all around us are deeply infused with craft, history and technology.

“I get a thrill seeing letters that are somehow perfect for their application whether it’s a Roman stonecarving, a book from the 1470s, an album cover, a typeface enabling people to use a language in writing for the first time, a decorated funfair ride, maybe even a station exit sign!”

Laurence, a software engineer who lives in Clifton, said that Bristol is a great city for font fans.

“Walk up Gloucester Road or around St Nick’s Market and you’ll see lots of excellent recent signwriting. The Mother’s Ruin, exuberantly painted by Dapper Signs, is my personal fave.

“Right now I’m concerned about the gorgeous 1930s ‘To The Zoo’ sign on Guthrie Road. I do hope it stays forever, rather than ending up in someone’s back garden or a skip.”

The next Letter Luvvers meet-up is taking place on Wednesday at 6.30pm upstairs at the Stag & Hounds. To register for a free ticket, visit www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/letter-luvvers-02-tickets-412156750937
